Reduction Mammaplasty

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reshape the breasts and reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin around the nipple).

Breast Reduction

People choose to have breast reduction for various reasons, including:

  • Relief from physical discomfort: Large breasts can cause chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as headaches, and skin irritation under the breasts. Reducing breast size can alleviate these issues.

  • Improved physical activity: Smaller breasts can make it easier to exercise and participate in sports without discomfort or limitations.

  • Enhanced self-image and confidence: Many individuals feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies after breast reduction surgery.

  • Better clothing fit: It can be easier to find clothes that fit well and look proportionate after the surgery.

  • Improved posture: The weight of large breasts can pull the shoulders forward, leading to poor posture. Breast reduction can help improve alignment.

Who is a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?

A good candidate for breast reduction surgery is typically someone who experiences one or more of the following:

Physical Symptoms:

  • Chronic pain: Persistent back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of large breasts.

  • Shoulder grooving: Indentations on the shoulders from bra straps.

  • Skin irritation: Rashes, chafing, or infections under the breasts.

  • Limited physical activity: Difficulty participating in sports or exercise due to breast size.

  • Poor posture: Hunching or other posture problems related to breast weight.

  • Headaches: Tension headaches related to neck and shoulder strain.

Practical Issues:

  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit properly.

  • Problems with bra fit and discomfort from tight bra straps.

  • Sleep discomfort due to breast size.

Emotional and Psychological Well-being:

  • Dissatisfaction with the size and weight of their breasts.

  • Poor self-image or self-consciousness related to breast size.

  • Emotional distress, anxiety, or depression associated with large breasts.

General Health and Lifestyle:

  • Good overall health: Candidates should not have significant medical conditions that could increase the risks of surgery or impair healing.

  • Realistic expectations: Understanding the potential outcomes and limitations of the surgery, including scarring and potential changes in sensation or breastfeeding ability.

  • Stable weight: Significant weight fluctuations can affect breast size and shape and the long-term results of the surgery.

  • Non-smoker: Smoking can impair blood flow and healing, increasing the risk of complications. Surgeons often recommend quitting smoking several weeks before and after surgery.

  • Fully developed breasts: While there's no strict age limit, surgeons often prefer breasts to be fully developed before considering reduction surgery, particularly for younger individuals.

It's important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can assess your individual situation, discuss your goals, and determine if breast reduction surgery is the right option for you. They will evaluate your medical history, perform a breast exam, and discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure in detail.

How long does a breast reduction last?

Results are long lasting; however breast size and shape will change with any future pregnancies, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, and age. Not wearing supportive underwear can also have an adverse effect.

How is breast reduction procedure performed?

Usually performed using an ‘anchor shaped’ incision that circles the areola, this extends downwards to and along the natural crease of the body to below the breasts (much shorter with newer techniques). In most cases, the nipples stay attached to their blood vessels and nerves. However, if the breasts are very large, they may then need to be removed and grafted into a higher position (rarely performed). The skin is then brought from both sides of the breast down and around the areola, shaping the new contour of the breast.

Duration of operation - 2 to 3 hours in our clinic (that results in less bleeding, less operation problems and fast recovery)

Hospital stay: 1 night

What to expect immediately after surgery

You will usually leave the hospital with elastic bandages over your breasts, which will be swollen and tender for several days. A soft support bra will replace these bandages 4-5 days later, which will be worn for up to 8 weeks. This soft support bra (rather than the elastic bandages) is occasionally put immediately after the operation. A loss of feeling in the nipples and breast skin is normal and usually passes within 1-6 months, during which time activities should be restricted. Drains may be left in place to remove excess fluid from the body however these are usually removed 1-4 days later following surgery.

How long will it be before I can get back to my normal life?

This is not a simple operation and recovery should not be rushed. A 7-10 night stay is recommended in Turkey following the procedure and most people can return to work within 2 weeks. You should limit exercise until your energy levels increase and avoid anything other than gentle contact with your new breasts for up to 6 weeks. It will take around 3 months for your breasts to settle into their new size and shape.

Can breast reduction surgery be performed without scar?

The removal of skin and necessitates the creation of scars on and under the breasts. Most scars are conspicuous initially, and they may be lumpy and red for some months, however with the right care, over the next 12 months they will fade in appearance. These scars are much shorter with newer methods.

Does breast reduction affect breast-feeding?

Breast reduction removes many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples; therefore breast-feeding may not be possible after this procedure.
