Mini Tummy Tuck
Mini Abdominoplasty
A mini tummy tuck, also known as a mini abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that focuses on improving the appearance of the lower abdomen. It's a less extensive option compared to a full tummy tuck and is ideal for individuals who have mild to moderate concerns primarily below the belly button.
Here's a breakdown of what a mini tummy tuck entails:
What it addresses:
-
Excess skin and fat: The primary goal is to remove a small amount of extra skin and fat that has accumulated in the lower abdomen, often due to pregnancy, significant weight fluctuations, or aging.
-
Minor muscle laxity: In some cases, the surgeon may tighten the lower abdominal muscles, but it's typically less extensive than the muscle repair done in a full tummy tuck.
-
Lower abdominal "pooch": It's effective in correcting a small bulge or "pooch" that resists diet and exercise.
-
Stretch marks: While not its primary purpose, some stretch marks in the lower abdomen may be removed with the excess skin.

Mini Tummy Tuck
Key differences from a full tummy tuck:
Incision: A mini tummy tuck involves a shorter incision, usually placed horizontally just above the pubic area, often hidden within the bikini line. A full tummy tuck requires a longer incision from hip to hip and typically an additional incision around the belly button.
Belly button: The belly button is generally not repositioned in a mini tummy tuck, unlike a full tummy tuck where it needs to be detached and reattached.
Scope: A mini tummy tuck focuses only on the area below the belly button, while a full tummy tuck addresses both the upper and lower abdomen.
Muscle repair: Muscle repair (diastasis recti correction) is less common or less extensive in a mini tummy tuck.
Invasiveness: It's considered a less invasive procedure with generally shorter surgery time.
Who is a suitable candidate for a mini tummy tuck?
If your skin laxity, sagginess and muscle weakness are limited to the area below the belly button you may be suitable for this procedure.
When combined with liposuction, which removes excess fat, a mini tummy tuck restores good contour, and results in trimmer, thinner waistline and a more aesthetic appearance.
It can be performed as a single procedure, but can also be combined with breast shaping, eyelid & facial surgery.
How long does a mini tummy tuck last?
Results of a mini tummy tuck can be seen immediately and are long lasting, providing it is supported by a healthy diet & lifestyle and you do not experience massive weight changes in the future.
How is the mini tummy tuck performed?
This procedure is similar to that of a standard tummy tuck; however the incision is smaller, only extending to include excision of the excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal area. Many would ideally like a scar of only 4-5cm but this is not possible, because it must be long enough to include the excess skin (usually 14-20cm). To give a visual idea, for those women who have had a bikini line caesarean, the incision is usually just a little longer than that. Liposuction is often used to accompany this procedure, and drains may be put in place to drain off excess fluid. The belly button is not repositioned.
Duration of operation 1 – 1.5 hrs (general anesthesia)
Hospital stay – We recommend one night in hospital
What should I expect immediately after a mini tummy tuck?
Your tummy may feel tight, sore and uncomfortable. This is normal and will pass within a few days. You can expect bruising and swelling, and following the procedure you will need to wear a medical garment for up to 3 to 6 weeks. Recovery from a mini tummy tuck is a lot quicker than that of the standard abdominoplasty.
How long will it be before I can get back to my normal life?
Recovery as always after any cosmetic surgery procedure should not be rushed and anyone undergoing this procedure should listen to their body and have plenty of rest. Light exercise may commence after a few weeks and a full routine of exercise can be resumed after 1-2 months. Although the results are visible immediately, final results of the procedure can be seen after 6 months. A 4 to 7-night stay is recommended in Turkey following the procedure and most people can return to work after a week.
Can a mini tummy tuck be performed without scar?
A tummy tuck, mini or otherwise leaves a scar as the results of a cosmetic surgery procedure. However, the scar from the mini tummy tuck is a lot shorter than that of a full tummy tuck. Made as low as possible above the pubis, it can usually be hidden by underwear until fully recovered at 12 months post surgery.

Mini Tummy Tuck Recovery
Recovery:
-
Shorter recovery: Generally quicker and less painful than a full tummy tuck.
-
Discomfort: Expect some mild to moderate pain, tenderness, and swelling, which usually subsides within a couple of weeks.
-
Compression garment: A compression garment is typically worn for 3 to 6 weeks to reduce swelling and aid healing.
-
Activity: Light activities can often be resumed within 1 to 2 weeks, but strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
-
Drains: Drains are less commonly used compared to a full tummy tuck, but may be placed in some cases.
-
Scars: The scar is usually hidden by underwear or swimwear and fades over time.
What tummy tuck surgery can't do
A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program.
Although the results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight. For this reason, individuals who are planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies would be advised to postpone a tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, although these may be removed or somewhat improved if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised.
